On Tuesday 29 January the Gold Coast City Council will be asked to debate and vote on removing the 2009 decision to ban circuses with exotic animals from setting up on council land.

In 2009, the Gold Coast City Council made a wonderfully historic decision to be one of the first City Councils in Queensland to take a stand against submitting exotic animals such as elephants, large cats and monkeys to a life of confinement, isolation and distress - only to perform tricks for entertainment.

There is no justification for the use of such animals in circuses, as there are no education, research or conservation benefits to the practice. Children in particular do not learn anything beneficial or positive about exotic animals by seeing these animals perform tricks in a circus.

Please speak up for exotic animals in circuses, and ask the Gold Coast City Council to stand firm and not allow circuses with exotic animals to use Council land.

To the honourable Gold Coast City Councillors,

We the undersigned do not want exotic circus animals chained, caged, forced to live in cramped and unsuitable housing, and hauled from town to town in a 'beast wagon' in the name of ‘entertainment’. There is no justification for the use of exotic animals in circuses, as there are no education, research or conservation benefits to the practice.

Please stand firm on your original decision and not allow circuses with exotic animals to use Council land.

Thank you for your consideration.
