Support Prop 29
Proposition 29 will be on the statewide ballot on June 5th. If approved by the voters, it would add one dollar to each pack of cigarettes. The funds will be used to create public education campaigns to reduce the rate of smoking and to fund new research on smoking related cancer.
Studies tell us Prop 29 could produce a 13 percent drop in youth smoking and more than $5 billion of long-term health savings.
Since the landmark Surgeon General’s report linking cigarettes to cancer and heart disease in 1964, Americans have become more aware of the health dangers associated with smoking and the rate of adult smoking has been cut in half. But we need to do more, especially to reach teens and young adults.
So far, tobacco companies have spent more than $23 million to defeat Prop 29, and they likely won't stop there.
But support is growing:
-- American Lung Association
-- Livestrong Foundation
-- Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids
-- Stand Up to Cancer
-- American Heart Association
"Your vote can make the difference. On June 5th, vote yes on Proposition 29 to fund research and research facilities focused on detecting, preventing, treating and curing cancer, heart disease, emphysema, and other tobacco-related diseases, and to finance prevention programs."
— Senator Alex Padilla
I support Proposition 29 and I pledge to encourage my voting friends and family to vote YES on Prop 29 on June 5th.
