Make UGA's Arch Accessible
This petition had 1,276 supporters
"Every May, a legion of the University of Georgia (UGA) graduates takes their first symbolic walk through the Arch. Since being commissioned in 1856, the Arch has become the literal and figurative transition from the campus into the community."
Khaled Alsafadi, Carden Wyckoff, and Marquise Lane believe in creating equal access to all students and alumni, all three are registered thru the Disability Resource Center and represent the vast majority of students and alumni who in some way or another have a mobility impairment preventing them from using the stairs that are under the Arch.
Thus, they have a dream to make the Arch accessible for all graduates by building a PERMANENT ramp through it. Despite the daily obstacles they have to overcome in order to graduate with a college degree, they cannot participate in one of the most coveted of UGA traditions like their able bodied peers.
Now is the time for change. They wholeheartedly support the goal to create equal access for ALL alumni to pass through the Arch with pride and confidence.
Modifying the stairs will show that UGA is both a leader and a highly respected institution for higher education that treats and honors ALL of their family, regardless of their mobility or abilities.
They need our help! To join the movement please sign this petition if you are in favor of providing EQUAL ACCESS at the Arch by allowing the construction of a PERMANENT ramp.
Together we can create change
