Saving the Coral Reefs From Harmful Chemicals in Sunscreen

Saving the Coral Reefs From Harmful Chemicals in Sunscreen
Why this petition matters
SAVE THE CORAL REEFS
Over 50% of the world's coral reefs have died in the last 30 years, and up to 90% may die within the next century. In order to stop further reefs from dying, we need to take action as soon as possible. In sunscreen, there are a lot of chemical compounds harmful to the coral reefs since they can cause bleaching. Even if the coral reef is exposed to an extremely low concentration of the chemical compound, it is still at risk of dying.
Some chemicals to look out for in most generic sunscreens are:
- Benzylidene camphor
- Methylbenzylidene camphor
- Oxybenzone
- Octocrylenz
- Benzophenone-1,3,8
- OD-PABA
- Nano-Titanium dioxide
- Nano-Zinc oxide
- Octinoxate
- Oxybenzone
Sign this petition to encourage large sunscreen companies(Neutrogena, Coppertone, Banana Boat, etc.) to start creating sunscreens with more environmentally friendly chemicals. Along with this, the FDA and EPA need to ban coral bleaching and the toxic substances used inside sunscreen.
