Hyderabad, was once called City of Lakes, in 1970's it had close to 3000-7000 water bodies(natural & man-made). Today we have only 70-500 lakes and the rest disappeared. Yet another lake will disappear due to lake encroachments, if no action is taken by the community & government collectively. Yes, Yellamma cheruvu needs protection from encroachments.

Yellama Cheruvu alias Manikonda Cheruvu located in Khajaguda, Hyderabad is suffering from severe encroachments along the Buffer zone of the lake. The neighbouring communities collectively are striving hard to protect the lake along with NGO's like SAHE. Media articles on the community effort for the welfare of the lake is as below:

A media coverage dated "April 14 2018" on Community initiative to restore the lake by organizing a SAVE THE LAKE RUN initiated by Lanco Hills Community.

A media coverage dated "June 3, 2019" Community along with SAHE & GHMC cleared the Yellamma Cheruvu.

The beautiful “Yellamma cheruvu” which was once a rain water harvesting pit, rich with good water, destination for many exotic birds is gradually being encroached by lake sharks. It is a serious illegal activity, as per law, sections 441, 447 of IPC are applicable for the encroachers in the Buffer Zone. There are upcoming constructions in the Buffer zone and thus we, communities around the Yellamma Cheruvu represented by the upcoming Lake Protection Committee, APPEAL THE GOVERNMENT OF TELANGANA TO PROTECT YELLAMMA CHERUVU FROM ILLEGAL ENCROACHMENTS

In support of the cause, we sign this appeal and earnestly request the Government of Telangana to take action for the protection and preservation of Yellamma Cheruvu

1) To immediately stop ongoing encroachments in the buffer zone.

2) Take measures & actions to stop any further encroachments.
