Today, I learned Whittier College will no longer participate in NCAA Intercollegiate Football.  Whittier has been playing football since 1907, and to end it after 115 years is beyond sad.  As I understand it, this decision was sudden without notice, at least to the coaches and players.  Whittier football and the homecoming experience are an integral part of the college experience and it will be sad to see this go.  D3 sports are not revenue-generating so this should not be an issue, and I am sure this is not a Title 9 issue.  Although Whittier has not won during the past decades, football like other sports is more than winning and losing.  Many of the 60-plus football players would not attend Whittier, if not for playing football.  Whittier College without football will damper alumni participation, and male, football athletes will probably not consider Whittier.
