Why this petition matters

Started by Hal Barker

Here in Dallas, at White Rock Lake, is the Bath House Cultural Center. It is a place for those visiting the park to see plays, have events, and attend indoor and outdoor art and environmental displays. And learn about the history of White Rock Lake.

Inside is a small but wonderful White Rock Lake Museum that was gifted to the people of Dallas and especially those who live nearby or frequent this historic lake and buildings.  All this was done by local volunteers with their own funds.

The gift was installed and dedicated in 2004 with the involvement of former City Council members for D-9 District with the help of Park Director Willis Winters.  There is much more but to the point.

The problem is the City of Dallas wants to evict this 412 square foot installation from a building that has over 20,000 sq ft of space. The entire affair is convoluted and shows how poorly government can operate in a vacuum of sense. Time is running out with a date of July 1, 2022.

The current plan proposed by the City of Dallas is to divide the display and move the pieces to two remote libraries in East Dallas. This makes no sense whatsoever but this plan is enthusiastically supported by Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson, members of the City Council, Arts and Culture groups, and other senior City officials.

A key element of this mess is that City Manager T.C. Broadnax forgot to sign the current lease contract and the City is seeking to use this gross error to force an eviction in a legal maneuver that makes no sense.

In a nutshell, the City believes that the 412 square feet is vitally essential for new office and storage space in the huge building overlooking the lake.

Will you support our volunteer effort and sign this petition to save this wonderful installation at the White Rock Lake Bath House in East Dallas?
