Totnes Leisure Centre’s classes, activities and the use of the sports facilities are under threat of closure by the 15th May.
This will result in 49 staff being made redundant, all of the well-subscribed classes ceasing and the end of the use of a wonderful venue for 23 schools, clubs and community groups.
There are three parties involved in this, SHDC, Tadpool and Fusion, and they haven't come to an agreement over documentation.
We urge these three parties to come to reach a decision which will enable the facilities to remain open.
We are a group of people who are passionate about our classes and we know there are many of you out there who feel the same way.
Please add your names in support of keeping these wonderful facilities open.
You can also join the Facebook group Save Our Classes At Totnes Pavillions to keep up to date with the happenings and add your voice of support to the cause.
THE LATEST POSITION
There still remain differences between SHDC, Tadpool and Fusion over legal documentation. It is understood that the parties are in discussions. If this matter is not resolved within the next few days the whole of the Leisure centre is threatened with closure resulting in the community being denied the use of both a valuable and popular leisure centre as well as the possibility of 49 Fusion employees being made redundant.
The Leisure Centre has listed the activities, weekly and annual uses that are currently being accommodated within the "dry side" of the Leisure Centre and which will have to cease should the Centre close. The current weekly uses total 1357 and the annual uses total 64,168.
In addition to these uses there is the regular hire of the facilities by 23 schools, clubs and community groups.
Fusion also operates most of the site functions and without its presence the whole of the Centre will be probably be unable to operate. The gym and pool will in all probability have to close and these have an annual attendance of about 95,000.
The Leisure Centre staff are operating under very stressful conditions with their customers expressing dissatisfaction and bewilderment at the pending closure.
If an agreement cannot be reached between SHDC, Tadpool and Fusion then it is my view, and others, that SHDC should immediately arrange for the 49 Fusion employees to be taken on by the Council and furthermore it take over the running of the Centre. In other words the position reverts the situation prior to the employment of Tone, the previous operator.
SHDC have been asked for assurances that they will ensure that the Leisure Centre will remain open and be fully staffed irrespective of the outcome of the differences between it, Tadpool and Fusion and that this matter be included on the agenda for Thursday's Full Council meeting as an item of Urgent Business. An urgent decision is required by SHDC
