First and foremost it will keep the Toora Post Office OPEN.
The income generated from the Town Mail Delivery Contract supplements the smaller income generated from running the Toora Post Office.
It will provide Local Jobs to Local Residents. The owners of Toora Post Office, Greg and Maree Stewart, and their son Chris. Additional work was also provided to other local residents.
The Toora Post Office has been running for nearly 100 years and is the HEART of the Toora community.
The closest alternate Post Office is located in Foster, some 10.8 km away. There is only ONE public transport service, provided by VLine coaches. During weekdays and between normal business hours, there is only ONE trip to Foster - at 11:46 am and the return trip back to Toora is at 4pm. This makes it an extremely limiting time frame to access the Foster Post Office and a long wait for the trip back to Toora. it also makes the trip almost impossible or extremely inaccessible to those with a disability , ill or frail especially the elderly.
TOORA Licensed Post Office (Toora L.P.O.) is NOT the only privately run Post Office; as Australia Post looks to increase its' profits, it is highly likely that the same situation will also affect many more of the "Mum and Dad" operators in all rural areas of Australia.
I have lived in Toora for only a year. In that time I have met and befriended so many local residents than in all the ears I spent living in the Suburbs. We are like a close-knit community; we do not live in each others' pockets, but if one of us is in need for assistance, we are there to support each other. That is somethnig so priceless and a rarity in todays' modern suburbs where everyone drives into and out from their garages and hardly get to know who even lives next door.
