Save Thessaly Oasis green space - for Wandsworth and Lambeth locals, before its too late.

This petition had 168 supporters

London Borough of Wandsworth want to build on Thessaly Oasis space (SW8), a precious local green space. They want to be able to demonstrate it as 'underused' and as having no community value, in order to build a case for private building development on this public site, with little or no community say in the matter. Seeing growing community concern, in November 2016 Wandsworth added new locks all around the site, in effort restrict any use or perceptions of value, and to suggest neither you or I have permission to access the site any longer.

However, this site is listed elsewhere as:

·       A Local Park with Unrestricted Access by the current Lambeth Open Space Strategy (see, p.32)

·       A Recreation Ground by the Ordnance Survey and Mayor of London in the current Mayor’s Green Spaces Map (see

·       A Protected Open Space within the Vauxhall Nine Elms Battersea Opportunity Area (see, p.21).

·       A site located within the River Thames Flood Zone and Flood Warning Area, by the Environment Agency (see – i.e. the green space is important!

Sign this petition to help keep it this way - as the wholly open, accessible, dynamic and safe recreational green public space it has been historically and must continue to be!

London Borough of Wandsworth are determined to build on this green space in the imminent future and are now discussing a pre-application proposal with Lambeth, whilst actively refusing to hear from local communities on the matter. Many communications show their wish to degrade the state of the space and their desire disprove this plot has community value, however we have heard otherwise from a growing number of locals who do care. So far Wandsworth have refused to listen and we need your help among the growing number concerned about such appalling, blanket and intentionally untransparent plans to remove local green space.

Already local community groups and residents representing young people and old, nature lovers, sports people, gardeners, artists, political groups, schools and more, have all expressed their support and deep passion to see this site urgently returned as accessible and community-serving open access land.

Can we count on you, too?

The Thessaly Oasis site, has been a greenspace and loved part of our local communities for 40 years. It was planted, painted, created and cared for by locals as a ‘playspace’ for since the 1970’s, and was handed to London Borough of Wandsworth by the community in 2004. Since then the council have left it to ruin, with little or no effort invested in caring for or improving this spot for the communities it is meant to serve.

The Thessaly Oasis Community Group has been set up by locals for locals and all supporters far and wide, who are interested to see this site kept as a public space that responds to local interests and serves community needs for recreational and green space.
