Utah State Prison will be torn down with the opening of the new correctional facility. The Wasatch building is the oldest buildings on the site. The former state prison in Sugarhouse was moved to the Draper site and placed as part of the Wasatch building. The building also includes the old Death Row and a tunnel system extending from one side of the building to the other. Guards used the tunnels to cross the building and move prisoners. Wasatch is one of the remaining buildings in the country with working Johnson Bar systems, like they have in Alcatraz. It is an important part of Utah’s state history and should be saved!
