Stop the cuts to funding for the arts and the changes in the format of the WA Premier's Book Awards

Dear Mr Barnett and Mr Day,
Over the last five months, there has been a lot of discussion in the arts community of Western Australia about the decision to halve funding of the WA Premier's Award and change the format to a biennial one. I thought you might be interested to see the following petition, to which almost 500 people have put their names in support of saving the WA Premier's Award. This prestigious award has been an important step in the careers of so many Australian writers, and recognises the achievements of writers and publishers from this state. The award, and the boost to sales that winning or being shortlisted can provide, allow writers the time and the space to produce their art, and sends the message that this state is about more than just mining. In literature, the complicated and beautiful history of our state is celebrated and recorded, a historical artefact in themselves and a means of connecting readers in a literary community. Western Australia has a vibrant and supportive arts community, one which I feel very privileged to be a part of.
I know that this issue is far more complicated than it appears on the surface, but I wanted you both to see how many people want this award to be reinstated, and kept at a yearly format. Our writers are to be treasured, as it is through art, and writing, and music, and song, and dance, and culture, that we find something we can all share.
I will be keeping this petition open for others to sign if they so choose, as I am sure there are more people out there who would support this issue.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
