Save the Virginia City National Historic Landmark

The Virginia City National Historical Landmark District (VCNLHD) was established in 1961as a property with exceptional value to the history of the nation. VCNLHD was listed in 1988 as "endangered" by the National Park Service due to cumulative effects of surface mining on the historic landscape. These effects have recently accelerated under large scale surface mining activities. The Secretary can take steps to mitigate or abate effects of surface mining in VCNLHDas provided by 16 U.S.C. 1908, "Mining in the National Parks Act of 1976, Section 9."

Letter to
Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell
U.S. House of Representatives
U.S. Senate
I just signed the following petition addressed to: Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar.

Save the Virginia City National Historical Landmark!
---------------

Please take steps to mitigate or abate effects of surface mining in the Virginia City National Historical Landmark (VCNLHD) as provided by 16 U.S.C. 1908, "Mining in the National Parks Act of 1976, Section 9."

The VCNLHD was established in 1961as a property with exceptional value to the history of the nation. The fictional Virginia City of the "Bonanza" TV show, was beloved by millions of viewers who took the opportunity to visit the real town. Large numbers of tourists continue to be drawn to the sights and sounds of the old west in Virginia City.

However, VCNLHD was listed in 1988 as "endangered" by the National Park Service because the cumulative effects of surface mining are degrading the historic landscape. During the past16 months, these effects have accelerated because of large scale surface mining activities that appear beyond the ability of local, state and Federal agencies to curtail.
