Many of us are extremely concerned that the works along the Otley Road, proposed by North Yorkshire County Council, will require removal of at least 12 trees and considerable parts of the Stray Slips. i.e. the grass strips either side of Otley Road which run from the main body of the Stray up to, and around, Cold Bath Road and Arthur’s Avenue, which are actually part of Stray land.

The Stray Act states that Stray land cannot be taken without being given back somewhere suitable close by. Neither North Yorkshire County Council nor Harrogate Borough Coucil (the caretakers of the Stray) have communicated where they intend to give back what they are proposing to take. Our concerns are that this is setting a very dangerous precedent for the future of the Stray.

Then there is the massive issue of felling mature trees. Few tree lined roads remain in the UK - once these mature trees are felled they are gone forever. Ten are apparently being felled to facilitate traffic and a further two to create a cycle lane. Trees provide our oxygen, they provide a natural flood defence, a home for wildlife, absorb carbon emissions and are aesthetically pleasing and good for our mental health. Recent government reports have evidenced the importance of trees in towns.

Please sign and share my petition to stop the unnecessary felling of yet more trees in towns!
