Save the Sungei Road Market

This petition had 74 supporters

This petition has been started in hopes of saving one of the oldest and most historic landmarks in Singapore history: The Sungei Road Market, or more affectionately known as 'The Thieves Market'. This eight decade old market is to be shut down on the 10th of July 2017 to be upgraded for future residential use and to pave way for a new train station. Growing up, I've seen many of the monuments that gives us our Singaporean identity wiped out by the threat of urbanisation. How much longer before we realise that by eroding parts of our history away, we do no favours to the future generation? My fellow Singaporeans, it is time to take a stand.

*The word ‘sungei’ is derived from the Malay language which means ‘river’, while the word ‘larut’ means ‘dissolve’. Do watch the video in HD for maximum quality.
