We the residents, property owners and friends of the Sam Garner Road Community adamantly oppose the Bridges Street Extension Project (R-5727) that would divide our community, abolish homes, and destroy critical natural resources.
The Sam Garner Road Community, located in Newport, North Carolina, is under consideration by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) for a Morehead City project (Bridges Street Extension; R-5727) with the intent to construct a four-lane highway. Additional intent of the project is unclear at this time; however this petition is to ensure the voice of the community is heard!
The Sam Garner Community is home to generational families. Many grew up visiting or working in our community. We were once a dirt road that became paved with memories. Our homes, the produce stand along with the old green tobacco barn stand as landmarks and offer a legacy of generations to come. When you think of our area, you think of family.
The Farm located on Sam Garner Road, was established in the 1940’s and is one of the last working farms in eastern North Carolina. The produce stand serves thousands not only in the county but throughout the state by providing sustainable food production and education. It provides a source of fresh, local produce, and a hub for community and service learning.
Hull Swamp adjoins our community and provides a unique and beautiful ecosystem balancing cultivated and native plants and animals.
It is entirely possible to save this community and still meet NCDOT transit needs to obtain greater “mobility” and “access” to the Industrial Drive, Morehead City, NC.
Please help us by signing our petition to save this integral part of our community. Please stand with us to:
-Retain Sam Garner Road, the community and farmland as is; where soils have been built up for over 75 years.
-Retain the Sam Garner Road community to ensure that it can continue sustainable production-scale agriculture.
-Retain the Sam Garner Road community and preserve the significant wildlife corridor known as Hull Swamp that surrounds and serves as a vital habitat for eagles, turtles, frogs, hawks, owls and various other wildlife living in balance within an integrated ecosystem.
We ask that NCDOT consider routing the extension to the West of our Community which will preserve our homes and land, while still meeting the NCDOT transit needs, or that NCDOT consider another alternative route.
