UNESCO WH Committe Decision regarding Ohrid
Aug 25, 2016 — Dear supporters
We would like to inform you that, after the adopted decision of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee (Decision: 40 COM 7B.68) on their 40th session in Istanbul, Turkey, regarding the Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Ohrid region, we launched a campaign - IT’S SIGN!FICANT, for preserving our only UNESCO site.
The WH Committee expressed serious concern over the future of the region of Ohrid, having in mind the number of large-scale infrastructure projects that have been proposed and the conclusions of the impact assessments that confirm that these projects would be likely to cause significant potential impacts on the Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) of the region of Ohrid.
Additionally, the Committee requests from the Macedonian Government to invite a joint World Heritage Centre/ICOMOS/IUCN Reactive Monitoring mission to the property in 2016 and highlights the possibility Ohrid to be included on the List of World Heritage in Danger 2017.
We all have the right and duty to preserve this heritage and to pass it on to the future generations, not only in Macedonia, but the next generation worldwide. That is why we launched the campaign, asking for a moratorium on these destructive projects and full implementation of the Law on managing the world natural and cultural heritage in the region of Ohrid.
