The Osmanpur Gayebi Mosque in Balaganj is unique to the history of Sylhet as it is one of the oldest, still standing and functional mosques in the area. The mosque itself has been researched and referenced in a number of reports and books, and the exact date of its construction remains unknown. However, scholars believe it dates back to the Sultanate period with an estimate of its build being placed as early as the 15th century.
Sadly, some of the locals in the Osmanpur area wish to demolish this historical building and we fear all this rich Islamic and Bangladeshi history, a lot of which is yet to be uncovered, will be lost with it.
This building has remained standing for countless generations and with your support by signing our petition we can try to help conserve this cultural heritage site and architectural landmark for future generations to come. Thank you.
