Save the Grizzly Bears of the Lower 48 - Stop the Delisting & Trophy Hunt

Save the Grizzly Bears of the Lower 48 - Stop the Delisting & Trophy Hunt
Why this petition matters

Permanently protect the grizzly and acknowledge the effects of climate change.
The states of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming want to remove the grizzly from the endangered species list (delisting). Delisting will mean a trophy hunt. These states are not prepared to manage our precious grizzly bears and are in fact actively working to reduce grizzly bear populations. State management proposals are not based on sound science as demanded by the endangered species act. Climate denial is no way to manage grizzly bears.
Why no delisting?
Grizzly bears are dispersing onto the landscape due to the effects of climate change and are being killed at an alarming rate. These "explorer" bears must be shown tolerance and given “room to roam”. We must learn to coexist and prepare communities across the West with bear-smart practices and initiatives. Wildlife crossing structures are needed across our busy interstates and are critical in order to have connectivity and safe passage between isolated bear populations. Black bear baiting in grizzly country must cease, as well as trapping of gray wolves, which can impact grizzly bears. The 1986 US Fish and Wildlife Service guidelines for nuisance bears are out of date and need to be updated. There are only a few grizzlies occupying the 4.6 million acre Bitterroot/Salmon/Selway ecosystem, an ecosystem twice the size of Yellowstone National Park. And lastly, we need to permanently secure what’s left of critical grizzly habitat before it’s too late.
We are asking Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland to evaluate the effects of climate change and increasingly dangerous state regulations on the bear, and implement a new comprehensive scientific management plan that includes the wishes of the Piikani Nation Grizzly Bear Treaty and other Native Americans, and listen to those and other voices of the country when we say, “No delisting. We want the grizzly bear permanently protected.”
Grizzlies are an iconic species that belong to all of us, and themselves — not the special interests that are pushing for delisting and trophy hunting of grizzly bears. As part of the public trust, Grizzly bears are to be cherished and celebrated for the special animals they are.
