Why this petition matters

Many people don’t know what gibbons are and thus don’t know that they’re going extinct. Gibbons are magnificent apes that are critically endangered. They are the most agile of all tree dwelling mammals and live in groups. There are two main reasons causing they’re low numbers. 1. Illegal logging is a huge part of the problem. Loggers will purposely cause wildfires to burn trees and start palm oil fields. The jungle that they destroy is the home of the gibbons. The gibbons either die, or go adapt to city life. But once a gibbon adapts to a city or town, it can take up to ten years for them to remember how to live in the wild again. They often die as well. 2. The black market pet trade shoots twenty adult gibbons every day, just to get their hands on a baby. They allow tourists to take pictures with the young gibbon, often causing stress to the baby. Once the baby gibbon gets around five to seven years old, it gets very aggressive and wants to start a family of its own. So then the kidnappers release the gibbon, only for it to die within a week because it’s forgotten everything it has previously learned. This isn’t right. These are great creatures that don’t cause any harm too any people. They just want to be left alone. Why we can’t respect that, I’ll never know.  But this needs to stop. I know that.
