Save our GD French program!

Research shows that the benefits of foreign language learning are numerous (i.e. supports higher academic achievement, increases cognitive skills, influences cultural perception and attitudes) (1).  Given the growth of globalization in our world today, foreign language study has never been more relevant and important.

In short, Foreign/World Language programs offer a window to the rest of the world and, in turn, our own.  The young minds of our students are fertile and ready to absorb knowledge with limited effort.

Our GD school committee has decided to close one of these windows on our students:  the French program is being abruptly phased out* based on massaged statistics**, and a lack of creativity.

How can we claim to open our children's young minds to a rich and vibrant, global community, if we exclude this international language of reference spoken on every continent?(2)

Please join this petition to request the GD School Committee reinstate the French program without delay.

Thank you for your support!

** The effective drop in French language enrollment is not 25%, but rather <2% because the initial calculation does not take into effect the overall drop in attendance (from the school and language enrollment) in the 2 denoted years.

In 2011-2012 there was 321+222+69 = 612 students enrolled in languages
in 2016-2017 there was 300+201+52 = 553 enrolled in languages
69 / 612 = 11.3%, Student percentage enrolled in French in 2011-2012
52 / 553 = 9.4%, Student percentage enrolled in French in 2016-2017.  The difference between the two years' French enrollment = -1.9%
