Save the Food Coalition- fighting hunger in Austin

The goal of our petition is to have the City of Austin amend the Organics Diversion Ordinance, creating and managing a long overlooked category of resource; FOOD. Currently food is grouped in with organic waste. Often it is called food scraps or food waste, but…

Food is not food waste until it has been wasted!

This new ordinance will

1. Make the distinction between food and organic waste
2. Have food businesses quantify the amount of leftover food they generate.
3. Have them set the food aside and contact a food recovery organization/business to have them pick it up.

Currently, food is discarded with no regard to its value as a source of nutrition to humans or farm animals. Food establishments easily overlook the need for additional good food in our communities. However, 17.3% of Central Texas residents are food insecure- this food "waste" could improve their health and even save lives.

Join our mission to keep usable food out of compost piles and give in back to our community members in need!
