Why this petition matters

Started by Julia Peterson

In 1974 The Safe Drinking Water Act was established to protect the quality of drinking water in the U.S.  In 1975 the Edwards Aquifer was designated as a Sole Source Aquifer by the US EPA.  It is the only SSA in Texas,  and the sole source of water for San Antonio and the surrounding area.  Unregulated aggregate mining is threatening to destroy the Aquifer.  The Edwards Aquifer is a Karst Aquifer and requires the subcutaneous karst in order to function.  It is this karst that is being blown up and then crushed by the tons every single day all over the Recharge and Contributing Zones of the Aquifer.  TCEQ,  EAA, US EPA, are three of fifteen regulatory agencies that are tasked with monitoring these aggregate mining companies.  The problem is they don't "protect" anything, their job is to regulate activities that they are very well aware cause devastating destruction to the aquifer.  Texas and specifically TCEQ has become known for it's lax regulatory environment when it comes to the protection of the Aquifer.  With the Mega Drought we have been experiencing, combined with TCEQ's unwillingness to enforce what little they are responsible for we are facing the destruction of the only water source for our area.  We must hold the agencies responsible and demand they start enforcing the laws that they have created.  If we do not hold them accountable we will lose one of our most precious resources, we have a responsibility to protect the water that millions of people and future generations depend on for our very lives. It is up to us to speak up and demand accountability! Let your voice speak for the future of our children and our grandchildren we must protect the aquifer.
