Why this petition matters

Started by Paul Mills

There is a plan to remove the ivy off the former library in Brecon town centre. This of course will disturb an entire ecosystem that bees, insects, birds, and other plant & animal life rely on. There are many ways to repair the building underneath the ecosystem without having to destroy it.

Brecon people - you might like to go and take a look at the Ivy that covers the corner of the old library on Ship Street and appreciate it while it is still there. Starlings roost in it and murmurate every year over Ship Street - this won't happen again. So much wildlife shelters in there throughout the year.
Any structural damage to the building from the ivy can be fixed without having to remove it.

Birds are living in this ivy all year around and not just to roost. Bees also overwinter in it too. I appreciate that the Ivy on the old library needs to be tamed extensively but to remove it completely is an assault on the wildlife and our own pleasure of seeing it alive with birds especially when the migrating starlings return next year. Some starlings overwinter in this ivy. No more murmurations from them, no more sweet scent for us or much needed pollen for the ivy bee. Removing it is against everything we should be trying to do to improve our natural surroundings and to help clean the air.

Whilst cities invest in green walls, Brecon destroys its natural ones. Please add your voice.
