Why this petition matters

Started by Erica Lassiter

Ten years ago, one of the local parks in Douglasville GA essentially kicked out the waterfowl population after receiving numerous complaints from park goers that the duck feces on the sidewalks was disgusting. The ducks were also eating the new sod planted for the baseball/softball field renovations that the City of Douglasville paid more than 250K for.

These are not migratorial geese. They will NEVER leave a radius of 25 miles of their home. The park successfully implemented several initiatives to coax the animals to flee, including reflective tape around the perimeter of the pond and fake alligator heads in the water.

A large population of the ducks have managed to survive in other areas. Another group have not... They've been struck and killed in traffic, injured on major highways and I've personally seen several of them with broken wings. I watched one slowly dying in the parking lot of Arbor Place Mall because it wasn't able to fly anymore. The ducks have MULTIPLIED by the dozens in the last decade and at least once a week, I see one dead in the road.

Douglas County spends MILLIONS OF DOLLARS ON THIS CITY. The renovations of the downtown area alone are in the TENS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS.

There has to be a compromise. Here's one of MANY- Have the Parks Department hire someone to rinse off the sidewalk as often as needed. If we can afford millions in city renovations, why can't we pay someone a liveable hourly wage to keep the sidewalks clear of feces?? As far as the 250k sod? Well, they were clever enough to get the animals out of the pond successfully, so I'm sure smarter minds than mine can figure out a way to keep them off their fancy sod.

Please sign my petition....

With enough signatures, I can bring this to the City Council and start the process of relocating the ducks back to their home or ANY OTHER HUMANE SOLUTION.
