Save the Bee: Calling on food companies to commit to using authentic honey in products
Why this petition matters
Honey is a big part of the American diet with some 618 million pounds consumed annually according to the USDA.
However, cheap, adulterated forms of “honey” are flooding the U.S. market, with some experts estimating that up to 30% of the honey we consume is not real.
Genuine honey offers more than sweetness. It's a source of antioxidants, enzymes, and other beneficial compounds, often lost in adulterated versions. Supporting genuine honey also means endorsing sustainable beekeeping practices, vital for our global ecosystem through pollination.
Adulterated honey is bad for everyone. Ethical beekeepers and producers cannot fairly compete with tampered honey that is positioned as real but sold for substantially less. Consumers are deceived into buying a product that lacks the full nutritional benefits of genuine honey. Manufacturers – often unwitting participants in the purchase of adulterated honey – risk losing the consumers' trust and damaging their brand.
As concerned consumers and supporters of honey bees, we call on food manufacturers using real honey in their products to:
- Ensure authenticity: Buy honey has been rigorously tested and deemed authentic, such as True Source Certified honey
- Promote transparency: Clearly communicate honey country of origin and processing methods
- Back the bees: Engage in partnerships or initiatives that protect bees and support beekeepers
- Educate and inform consumers on the significance of genuine honey, its health benefits, and the critical role of bees in our ecosystem
Companies that embrace these actions will lead the industry in quality and transparency, ensuring consumer expectations for authentic honey are met, and ethical beekeeping and honey companies thrive and grow.
Join us in championing the authenticity and integrity of one of nature's finest offerings. Stand for genuine honey.
