Why this petition matters

Davidson College plans on tearing down the forest behind Akers and Knox to put in a new football stadium.

First, the idea of a new football stadium is unnecessary and illogical. The existing stadium is a good fit for the attendance that is typical at Davidson games. Moving the stadium to a less convenient location for students will likely reduce attendance at games. Also, the motto for the new stadium is "athletics done right." Although it is encouraging that alumni are willing to support advancing Davidson athletics, new facilities will not enhance the lives of student-athletes at Davidson College when existing facilities are already good. Scholarships are a better use of this money.

Davidson could alternatively build the facility in a less wooded place on campus, such as on the old-tennis-courts. Or, a less imposing facility could be built (at the old-tennis-courts) to house new locker rooms for teams without good locker rooms. This facility could also include another weight room to ease the overcrowding in the existing weight room.

By advocating for a new stadium, Davidson has shown how it is unaware of the ecological degradation of tearing away a forest. It will take decades to regrow a forest of the same magnitude. Please support this petition to help preserve Davidson's natural biodiversity!
