Why this petition matters

Started by Ana Duvnjak

The TDSB is currently looking into changing the way students are to be let into specialized programs, those including sports, arts, and academics. The new admissions process will stray away from an application-based system and go purely based on interest. The claim is to allow all students to have equitable access to these programs both local and decentralized.

Typically for an application, a student may need to submit report cards, take tests, or audition to be granted entry, allowing them to show their strengths, talents, and passions for the program they are applying to. This will no longer be required for admission if the new plan were to take effect, as it would be a random selection of students who put their names in to be considered.

This method of selection takes away from the students both in and out of these programs. It would allow students not best suited for the program to be let in, as well as reject students who have an extreme love and passion for what they are doing.

The school system does need to be more equitable, but scraping the application process of specialized programs is NOT going to fix that issue. If there was real care for equity across the school board the TDSB would start funding each school more, open more programs and start providing more resources to younger students in marginalized communities.

Don't let the TDSB take away from its students the last few resources we have left. Help save specialized programs because if this change takes effect, there is no going back.
