Save Sandia Creek Drive started this petition to Board Supervisor Jim Desmond and

Right now, Sandia Creek Drive, the scenic public road is under attack by approximately fifty residents determined to put IMPASSABLE and PERMANENT gates across a two-mile segment of Sandia Creek Drive near the San Diego/Riverside County line in De Luz Canyon to create a private gated community.

Sandia Creek Drive has been open to the public for over 50 years and originally intended as a secondary egress in case of a fire or flood. Thousands of people currently using Sandia Creek Drive will be forced to find alternate routes through Bonsall, Rainbow, Fallbrook, De Luz Heights, Tenaja, Murrieta, and Temecula. Highway 76 and Interstate 15 will be even more congested during peak hours. These gates will deny access to auxiliary businesses, workers, visitors, weekend tourists, motorcyclists, and surrounding area residents traveling to or from Temecula and Fallbrook.

Public Hearings regarding the gate permit were conducted by the Fallbrook Planning Group and approved in February 2021. On March 3, 2021, San Diego County Planning & Development Services Acting Director, Kathleen Flannery approved the gate permit.

Public records request revealed North County Fire Chief Steven Abbott sent an email dated July 10, 2019, to the County Planner and wrote, "We absolutely have fire safety concerns with the presence of these gates, even if they adhere to our standards. To begin, it’s my understanding Sandia Creek was originally created as a thoroughfare precisely to address secondary egress. Gating this road is establishing a risky precedent, particularly in light of reliance by the community as a major means of egress.

Two groups of concerned residents filed the necessary paperwork and paid the fees to appeal the March 3, 2021 Director of PDS Administrative Decision regarding the gate permit (PDS2019-AD-19-030) but now we need your help. This is our last chance to stop the gate permit.
