South Ayrshire Council are threatening to close Prestwick Swimming Pool. It is a well attended pool that is used regularly for swimming lessons for all ages, school swimming and swimming club along with public swimming times. It is much more accessible (both with having parking and being on bus routes) and many people prefer the pool to others in the area.
Prestwick swimming pool also has a gym section. It therefore provides excellent options for people wanting to exercise indoors (which lets face it is often the best option given our weather). If it were to close the lessons could not be accommodated elsewhere, and given that there is already lengthy waiting lists for lessons it would mean that children would not learn an essential life and life-saving skill. Given that we live in a costal area, children not learning to swim could lead to a great strain on rescue services in the future. In addition, swimming is a form of exercise renowned for its health benefits and suitable for all ages. If the pool were to close and people be unable to swim it would lead to an increased pressure on the already overstretched NHS.
Prestwick pool was built by the people of Prestwick. The people of Prestwick paid extra council tax for a year to finance its building, so please do not let our investment slip away.
Please sign the petition and show your support to keep our public facilities going in this area and to help encourage South Ayrshire to rethink the option of closing Prestwick pool!
