Let the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island know you want Padre Spencer Reece reinstated to his post as Priest-In-Charge of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Jackson Heights, NY.  

This is a call to action to Save Padre Spencer Reece. Add your voice! 

Spencer came to Jackson Heights in 2020 to fill a vacuum caused by the ravages of the pandemic and the death of the St. Mark's pastor. From this dark period, he has revived St. Mark's as a spiritual and cultural center for the entire Historic District. Now he is at risk of being moved out by the office of the Bishop of Long Island. The reasoning behind Spencer’s removal from his post is unconvincing, purportedly because a) the Sunday services start 5 to 10 minutes late, b) Father Spencer made mistakes during the services, and c) he does not engage in outreach. The reaction to this nonsense has been swift and furious in the neighborhood. 

We need to harness the energy of this moment and wield our love for Padre Spencer for good; we must let the Bishop know the positive influence Spencer has on the St. Mark’s congregation and on Jackson Heights as a larger community. Under his leadership, St. Mark's has become a vibrant cultural center, source of humanitarian relief, and place of contemplative beauty. Please add your name to our petition and also pick up the phone, or write a letter or an email. 

The Bishop should hear from those directly affected. You.

Here are just some examples of outreach Padre Spencer has brought to our neighborhood:

• Created free English classes for all.
• Oversaw the massive financial underwriting of the church organ.
• Encouraged musical events at St. Mark's.
• Led the continued improvement of the church gardens, allowing access to all.
• Supported the improvement of the median gardens.
• Steered support for local families affected by the 34th Ave building fire and Hurricane Ida.
• Shepherded the growth of the Lion's Share Food Pantry feeding over 500 families each month.
• Created the Red Door Poetry Series, bringing world-class poets to Jackson Heights.
• Increased income at St. Mark's to keep strong this landmark building in the Historic District.
• Ensured transparency on the land development proposed by the Diocese.
• Provided outreach and comfort to first responders, medical staff and patients at Elmhurst Hospital.
• Opened the sanctuary to grass-roots debates for local government candidates.
• Encouraged support of local businesses.
• Provided a safe, vibrant home for Scouts.
• Re-instated essential social programs such as AA, Al-Anon and Narcotics Anonymous.
• Welcomed back the Jackson Heights Art Club.
• Connected Jackson Heights families to support the education of Honduran orphan girls 

These important works and others that you may be familiar with need to be emphasized to the Bishop.
