We, the people of Salt Spring Island, in order to preserve our social and economic harmony and promote the enjoyment of the waterfront in Ganges BC, do hereby reject the arbitrary and anti-social actions taken by the Harbour Authority of Salt Spring (HASSI) in its recent notice for the Tree House Cafe to remove tables and chairs from the Manson Road gravel lane. We cite the Department of Fisheries and Oceans objectives established in the guidelines for Harbour Authorities:
“Harbour Authorities are essential to the social and economic life of many communities in Canada that depend on local harbours. Harbour Authorities link people to nearby waters by keeping vital harbour facilities in good repair. Harbour Authorities are also key in representing the needs of its users at the community level and to various interested parties.”
The recent legal notice presented to the Tree House Cafe threatens to impinge the operations of one of the community’s most important cultural gathering centers and tourist attractions, against the wishes of the community, and as such is in direct contravention of the HASSI mandate.
We therefore demand that the legal notice posted by the HASSI against one of the most popular and iconic businesses on Salt Spring Island, the Tree House Cafe, be withdrawn immediately.
The HASSI should focus on running the harbour, not interfering with the enjoyment of Salt Spring residents, visitors, harbour users or businesses near the harbour. Only by taking direct action to demand transparency and accountability from HASSI can the people of Salt Spring Island ensure a thriving harbour and economy.
