Why this petition matters

Started by Sarah Dimmick

This week, a school board member in Fairbanks, Alaska suggested that full-time librarians in our schools are expendable.

She argued that school librarians should be cut because “they don’t have students assigned to them.” But school librarians have ALL students assigned to them, and this produces big results: the on-site, certified librarians in our schools...

✅increase students' literacy scores.

✅increase students' grades.

✅increase students' information & technology literacy.

✅increase students' career & college readiness.

✅increase students' access to personalized learning opportunities.

All of these results align with the goals of our school district and our community in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Removing librarians from our schools will create a decline in all of these areas.

Here’s a synthesis of the research.

As community members in Fairbanks, we have a window of opportunity to reject the removal of librarians from our children’s schools.

Please sign this petition, and share it widely. Make sure to indicate if you are local to Fairbanks. Thank you!
