Why this petition matters

Started by Jessica Toddy

The Jefferson County School Board announced they would be voting on November 10th to close 16 Jefferson County elementary schools. The vote is all-or-none, so voting YES closes each school. Voting NO keeps all 16 open.

The vote is happening very quickly, with very little community involvement, which Superintendent, Tracy Dorland has acknowledged was by design. Her position is it would take too long to evaluate community by community.

While we acknowledge that something needs to happen due to budgets and declining enrollment, we have also seen a great lack of transparency, questionable methodology, faulty and incomplete data, and inequality concerns for lower-income communities and families with special needs.

Our ask is for the School Board to VOTE NO to this fast-moving proposal and allow the opportunity for the community the district serves to be a part of the dialogue and solution.
