Why this petition matters

Started by Jill Antony

Sixty two hectares of passive greenspace on the flood plane of the Macquarie River is under threat of being developed to accommodate St Johns Junior Rugby League Club development.  They have a $1m New South Wales government grant to progress the project.  And, the previous council was going to 'gift' 10 hectares of Regand Park passive greenspace for that development. Fortunately, the A/g Mayor at the time intervened and halted progress. The beneficiaries of this proposed development are Rugby league players only  - to the detriment of everyone else.

The community and tourists enjoy this passive greenspace away from roads and noise for walking - often with the family dog, cycling, birdwatching, photography, artists, or just allowing ourselves to 'be'.

This area links with the Tracker Riley path - in total a 13kms loop.

Should rugby league developers have their way, this area will change from passive greenspace supporting insects, birds and wildlife, to noisy crowds, bright lights, vehicle traffic, and litter that will make its way into the Macquarie River posing a threat to fish and water birds.

If we win the argument to preserve Regand Park passive greenspace it is preserved for intergenerational use that will continue to support the health and well-being of all the community, visitors and wildlife alike.

If we lose - the animals, birds and insects that call this area home, will be homeless, and will die, or birds will try and relocate. The community will have limited greenspace for rest, to cool down on a hot summers day, and walk amongst nature where bird-song abounds.
