Save Our Bathrooms- Urinals for Mechanicsburg Area High School's Bathrooms
The Issue
With our new renovations to our school, there is one thing missing: urinals. The new men's bathrooms only have stalls, which cause multiple problems. In terms of overall cleanliness, these areas have gone south, with the toilet seats and floors typically splattered with urine. It affects students hoping to use the restroom quickly because the wait is much longer. What once was 2-3 minutes easily can go 5 minutes or more. Longer waits aren't helped by the fact that multiple restroom areas are closed, resulting in long treks to the nearest restroom. Lastly, being a public high school, male students typically don't lift up the seat nor exercise the use of toilet paper to keep the seats clean. This is an endless cycle because the seats weren't clean in the first place, so nobody has a reason to clean up after themselves either. Finally, students hoping to go #2, unfortunately, end up looking for a clean stall, have clean up another student's mess, or hold it in until they get home.
If new bathroom plans aren't implemented immediately, this problem will become more expensive to solve because of the removal of previous new stalls, while current construction can adapt and include urinals in the new plans. Using the bathroom is affecting students, faculty, and classes more and more, due to long wait times, uncleanliness, or lack of attention because of "holding it in".
As a male student, we do not need many stalls. The old plans of 2 stalls and 4-5 urinals work very well. As many others can attest, needing to pee is the reason to use these facilities 4 out of 5 times. We do not understand the reasoning to abandon urinals, and we respectfully ask for revised facilities.
Our hope is to:
- Change the current restroom layout to include urinals.
- Remodel existing restrooms to swap out stalls for urinals.
Despite millions of dollars going into remodeling our beloved high school, this basic need is left out. Even the Port-A-Potty by the track has a urinal. Act now for cleanliness and efficiency. Act now to restore our bathrooms to their former glory.
