Help save Possession Point parklands from development by AT&T.

Save Open-Green Spaces on South Whidbey

Mission Statement
We, the citizens of South Whidbey, express our strong opposition to efforts to lease, sell or otherwise allow commercial development of public open/green spaces on South Whidbey within public parklands and near community neighborhoods.
We cannot, and will not, allow a few publically-elected officials supercede overwhelming public support to preserve the rural character of South Whidbey.

Goals
Goal 1. The immediate goal is to rally public opinion to prevent AT&T from constructing a 140' cell tower on Possession Point Ridge within the Dorothy Cleveland Trail parklands. This can be accomplished in either one of the following ways:
(1) Force the Port of South Whidbey (POSW) to reconsider their proposed lease with AT&T.
a. The three POSW Commissioners (Curt Gordon, Geoff Tapert and Chris Jerome) have declared a radical change in their mission from primarily "preserving the rural character of South Whidbey" to focusing on "commercial development of public parklands to support other Port projects, such as the Langley Marina expansion."
b. Their actions run counter to decades of policy decisions by previous POSW Commissioners; they have ignored forceful opposition by the communities most directly affected; and have disregarded potentially serious negative impacts on the environment.
(2) Present overwhelming evidence to the Island County Land Use Board to convince them to oppose granting development rights to AT&T based on various environmental, legal and moral grounds.

Goal 2. The longer-term goal is to prevent any future attempts by public officials to lease, sell or otherwise allow commercial development of public open/green spaces on South Whidbey within public parklands and near community neighborhoods. This can be accomplished in either one of the following ways:
(1) Rally support to convince Island County Commissioners (Helen Price-Johnson, Angie Homola & Kelly Emerson) to vote against any commercial development of public open/green spaces on South Whidbey within public parklands and near community neighborhoods.
(2) Encourage the establishment of an Island County policy requiring explicit voter approval, via the referendum process, prior to consideration of any efforts to lease, sell or otherwise allow commercial development of public open/green spaces on South Whidbey within public parklands and near community neighborhoods.

We, the undersigned, support these goals of the Friends of the Dorothy Cleveland Trail.
• We call upon the Port of South Whidbey Commissioners to rescind their proposed lease to AT&T-Cingular that would allow commercial development within the Dorothy Cleveland Trail parklands.
• We also call upon the Island County Commissioners to vote against commercial development of open/green spaces on South Whidbey within public parklands or near community neighborhoods.
