Newcastle City Council have threatened to close Newcastle's City Pool as early as March next year. By closing it, the associated swimming club, City of Newcastle ASC will become "homeless" and almost certainly forced to disband. The Club has produced 3 Olympic swimmers, a whole host of national swimmers and many swimmers that have represent Great Britain at an international level. The closure of this pool will end the City's Olympic swimming legacy from this Club and leave over 200 swimmers without the ability to be trained by the highly qualified coaches the club boasts in the sport they are so passionate about.
City Pool is a grade II listed building, so will ultimately remain empty and unused should the plans go ahead. Such a waste of an iconic building, with so much history, that has proved so successful to swimmers and the public alike. It is used daily for public swimming, it offers swimming lessons for both adults and children, it is also the only facility that has a Turkish Bath. It is regularly used for religions baptisms, Aqua Zumba, by schools for their swimming lessons and galas, by Newcastle University for their swimming and water polo clubs and of course for several hours a day by City of Newcastle ASC. It is the only City centre facility that is accessible to the community for both price and location.
As a nation we were promised a long lasting Olympic legacy that would provide investment and encouragement into sport. Instead, we are faced with multiple site closures that will prevent children fulfilling their dreams of competing for their country and potentially access to affordable swimming.
