Save the Maui / Moloka'i Ferry

This petition had 229 supporters

The Moloka'i Ferry is owned and operated by Sea Link of Hawaii whose agencies are Hawaii Ocean Project & Lahaina Cruise Company.

We have been the providers of this vital ferry service connecting travelers from Kaunakakai Wharf in Moloka'i, to Lahaina Harbor in Maui, since 1987. In the past couple of years, we have been running the ferry at a financial loss, incurred by running more routes than the community needs.

The Moloka'i Ferry is a treasure and lifeline to the residents and visitors of Maui and Moloka'i and we understand that the need is there. Unfortunately, the Hawai'i Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has mandated for us to operate even near-empty ferry trips. Due to low ridership this will bankrupt our operation unless sufficient subsidies are found, or if we are allowed to eliminate the unpopular trips with poor ridership.

Sea Link of Hawaii has repeatedly tried to get appropriate amounts of government subsidies, but sufficient government funds have not been made available. In the wake of the absence of proper subsidies, rigid rules, and airline price wars, our last attempt is simply asking to be able to stop the voyages that are unpopular. This would help the ferry service save valuable resources and continue to provide the community with a reasonable amount of service for the impacted Maui & Molokai workforce, local athletic teams, school groups, locals and tourists alike.

We are asking you, the public, for your Kokua. Please stand beside the Moloka'i Ferry and join our petition to help Sea Link of Hawaii show that the community agrees that the PUC's rigid rules should be changed. Allow Sea Link to eliminate unpopular trips, so they can continue to provide this valuable service to the Hawaiian community.

Please share on any and all social accounts. Tell your Facebook friends! Shout out in twitter! Call to your schools and churches, to your friends and family that live and or visit Maui and Moloka'i! You can help save the Moloka'i Ferry by letting the PUC know that the community stands behind eliminating ferry trips with little or no ridership.
