Caitlin Aissami started this petition to Governor Governor Beshear & Lt. Governor Coleman and

Governor Beshear and Lt. Governor Coleman,

I'm writing today as a teacher of an "orange" district in Kentucky that currently plans to re-open its doors on August 24th. Many of my colleagues, myself included, have been faced with the impossible decision to choose between our careers, our lives and our family's health and welfare.

This is not a fair choice to ask of the dedicated people who take care of our most precious citizens. Have we not given enough? You know the importance of teachers' voices. Your actions and leadership thus far have been nothing short of heroic. I urge you to continue the hard work you've started.

This federal administration will not step up to the plate. We must look to our state and local leaders to lead.

Please ensure that our local leaders such as our superintendents are given guidance to open only if the transmission rate is below a threshold percentage that our experts say is controllable. Please create systems to help monitor each school district. Please take action immediately to help prevent more valuable teachers from leaving their jobs.

Critical health and safety decisions are being made by too few. I know that I am worried about the ramifications of these decisions for decades to come. I am worried about equity, mortality, long-term health effects, job loss, and much more. Please put minds at ease. Please mandate a clear descriptor under which districts should be advised to implement NTI until further notice. In doing so, I believe you will put appropriate pressure back on communities to do their part to meet benchmarks and re-open schools.

Thank you for all of your hard work in keeping Kentucky safe!
