The City of Phoenix is considering giving away a well used north-south bicycle path in exchange for an east-west path. This will add another barrier to safe walking and bicycling in Phoenix. Little Canyon Trail on 31st Ave between Camelback Rd and Missouri Ave is a corridor that has long been a great path to walk and ride on without the risk of collision with inattentive drivers. The City purports to become a more bicycle-friendly city, but potentially giving away a safe path makes no sense.
Grand Canyon University has proposed constructing a new neighborhood park at 29th Avenue and Missouri Avenue and a new trail adjacent to Missouri Avenue. Under GCU’s proposal, in exchange for GCU constructing the new park and trail, the City and GCU would engage in a land exchange in which GCU would convey the new park and trail to the City. GCU would then receive the land where Little
Canyon Park currently sits and a portion of Little Canyon Trail owned by the City (and the release of the trail easements), effectively relocating and improving the park and trail.
This is proposal is anathema to building community and safe places to walk and ride bicycles. More than $1,222,000 was spent to build this this path!
There will be a public meeting on Sept 6, 2017 at 6:00pm at the Helen Drake Senior Center, 7600 N 27th Ave, Phx AZ 85051. Please attend and defend this trail !
Earlier this year, the City sought to abandon the bike lane on 5th Avenue from Roosevelt to Van Buren in favor of converting the road from one way to two way travel. That idea was reversed fortunately but your help is needed to save Little Canyon Trail !
