Save Leverhulme Park - Wildlife Corridor 'The Cutting'

This petition had 3,175 supporters

We are calling on Bolton Council, the sole trustees of the charity ‘Leverhulme Park’ to help save an important wildlife corridor that connects Leverhulme Park to Moses Gate through the Darcy Lever Marshes. Locally known as 'The Cutting' from housing development.

On the 9th May 1997 a sub-committee for Leisure Services disposed of a section of charity land under the charity ‘Leverhulme Park’. This deal circumvented the covenant and a 120 year lease that would see Bolton Council paid annual lease fees with the construction of a five a side sporting facility at Leverhulme Park.

On the 4th April 2006, Bolton Council granted a commercial lease of charity land to the 'Bolton Bowling Club' for 25 years. Annually Leverhulme Park generates tens of thousands of pounds in the use of it's land by multiple sporting bodies. During the period of 2016 in which a Cycle track was proposed on Leverhulme Park, Labour Council Leader Clifford Morris allocated £200,000 of tax payers funds to the project.

We therefore ask Margaret Asquith the Chief Executive of Bolton Council on behalf of the charity ‘Leverhulme Park’ to use the finances aquired from the commercial leases of Leverhulme Park charity land, to purchase 'The Cutting' that resides along Long Lane and incorporate it into Leverhulme Park. We also ask that Bolton Council if required uses it's reserve funds in the purchase of this land. Local conservation groups and neighbourhood groups have already pledged their support to volunteer, apply for lottery funding and to help transform the corridor.

We the people of Bolton in which Lord Leverhulme left his land to be protected, and those far and wide are requesting that the sole trustees Bolton Council act to preserve and save the vital wildlife corridor for future generations to enjoy by purchasing the cutting at the upcoming auction.
