LEIGH Times have launched an online petition to persuade the Post Office to reverse its decision to close the Leigh main post office in Rectory Grove.
The Post Office announcement has shocked residents and local businesses.
They have said there will be a consultation before the final decision is confirmed – but almost everybody knows that once the preliminary announcement is made it becomes a ‘done deal’.
Leigh Liberal Democrat Coun Carole Mulroney has already been in touch with the Post Office expressing her concerns of the adverse effect it will have on the area while Southend Labour Party have expressed their concerns, too.
The Post Office, in their reply to Coun Mulroney, explained that they were investigating transferring the facility to a nearby retail outlet – as they have done in so many towns around the country, suggesting that when this has been done the post office has opened for longer hours.
The big question, though, is: Has Leigh got a big enough retail shop to handle the amount of business that is currently handled in Rectory Grove?
In a number of other towns, the post office facility has been relocated to stores such as WH Smith.
But even when this has happened there have been complaints from customers.
One example is nearby Chelmsford – recently featured in a double-page spread in the Mail on Sunday in which it said:
“Chelmsford is a brand new city. It has enjoyed a multi-million pound revamp of its shopping centre. But the city does not justify a Crown post office. Instead a branch is run out of the back of the local WH Smith store.”
The problem is it has been tucked away upstairs behind a coffee shop and maze of bookshelves.
If Chelmsford has been reduced to this what chance has Leigh got to find a suitable alternative site?
We invite you to sign this petition that will be sent to the Post Office stressing how important it is that the Rectory Grove post office is kept open.
