Robyn Roberts started this petition to Heritage Victoria, CEO and Councillors of Banyule City Council (To the CEO, Mayor and Councillors RE Ivanhoe Library and the Civic Precinct Plan) and

Tell Banyule City council to think AGAIN about demolishing OUR iconic modernist library.

Banyule Council has just approved a controversial Civic Precinct Plan, which relocates our library service, arts spaces and community hall to be contained within a new 4 storey building attached to the State Listed Ivanhoe Town Hall, This has NOT been approved by Heritage Victoria and may NOT be.

They must be persuaded to rethink the demolition of this well designed, fit for purpose building, with its magnificent CBD views at each of its 3 levels. Its welcoming ground floor reading area provokes a feeling of community that is highlighted in the design by the two levels of atrium space, and the adjacent wall of windows looking out into the peak of the hill setting  - allowing masses of diffuse light into the reading area.

Council has not said EXACTLY what will happen to the site on which it stands - which is EVEN MORE DISTURBING - as the loss of public space in an era of high population growth is NOT REASONABLE, and especially in a CIVIC PRECINCT and an area where massive population growth is planned for and expected.... Privatised Housing outcomes have been discussed, but not confirmed.

The current Library building is well studied, with architecture students frequently assigned study tasks there. It relates to the greater heritage of the arts and architecture in Banyule very well - comparable in many aspects with other significant modernist, residential designs along The Boulevard - in Ivanhoe ( The Featherston House designed by Robin Boyd)  and also in Eaglemont - as well as St Georges Church, East Ivanhoe (Boyd and Romberg) The Boulevard is, part of the Scenic Tourist Route through Melbourne. Simon Reeves has rated the building as important to local heritage, - at least.  See http://www.builtheritage.com.au for his CV and Councils website for his report.

The library has small several meeting rooms - but also includes a large top floor space thats seats at least 100.

It is suited to expansion with a blank west wall that abutts a rear car park. Disabled access could easily be provided with a lift in this area of the building.
