Save Historic Trees in Soldier Hollow area

Save Historic Trees in Soldier Hollow area
Why this petition matters
We are concerned about the development going on within the Soldier Hollow area. We have been informed that the DNR is creating and developing campsites within the area. The plan is to remove 10 historic Black Willow trees from the Chalet area and replace them with over 35 new trees.
We have proposed that the DNR keep all of the historic trees within the area but have tried to compromise with them also. We’ve asked that 3 of the most stable of the trees within the area be preserved that are located at the Chalet. We have explained, like other nearby counties have done, that the DNR could reconfigure the new campsites which would help keep the historic, beautiful trees, and provide needed shade, etc. Who doesn’t want shade when you go camping? The trees are approximately 30 feet in circumference and because they are Black Willow, they help stabilize the ecosystem. The trees and area inhabit a variety of different birds, animals, and insects. Including (some that may be endangered) like owls and their babies, Sandhill Cranes, many doves, Monarch Butterflies, Milkweed, etc.
We have also asked for a survey regarding the impact that the construction will have to the area, entire valley, and it’s ecosystem but the DNR has yet to provide us with any type of environmental impacts or a survey that has been done. It’s truly concerning!
The DNR is planning to replant over 30 trees in the place of 8-10 historic Black Willows. It is not only concerning from a historical point but also, the amount of water these new trees will take! As you know, Governor Cox issued a state of emergency in April due to the lack of water in Utah. It is our opinion, the DNRs current plan for several new camping sites, is irresponsible and will impact our valley tremendously in so many ways!
We understand that growth and development is inevitable. However, it must be done in a responsible and respectful manner! Again, there’s not much time!! Please get involved and join us in preserving this beautiful area - that so many generations have considered sacred and cherish!
