The school wants to take over EME 1256, the last informal not-bookable study space on campus. They want to change it into a "maker space" where students can bring their ideas to life, EXCEPT to even use the space you need to complete 20 hours of training and there is no clear timeline of when the room will be operational. The IEEE club/MLRC already has such a room with 3D printers and tools that is open to all students with no required training and it is cheaper than using the 3D printers owed by the School of Engineering.
There is already a lack of informal study space on campus and with the noise pollution in the library due to the construction of the Teaching and Learning Center there is even less. There is no demand for a "maker space" on campus and functional study space is more important.
A sign was placed on the doors of EME 1256 between 3:30-4:00PM on Friday 20th saying that students had to remove their belongings before Saturday, October 21st. This is not sufficient notice. Students were not consulting or informed. This demonstrates a lack of respect for the student body. The way in which the School of Engineering approached this situation is underhanded and deceitful.
Help us SAVE EME 1256 and stop the school from taking even more space from students. Sign this petition to show your support.
