Kathryn McGarry: Save cyclists' lives by making "the dutch reach" part of driving tests

Many cyclists die or get devastating injuries because of an easily avoided problem: drivers rarely look before opening their door when parked on the side of roads. However, this is not the case in countries like the Netherlands, where the "dutch reach" is common practice, which is to open the door with the right hand instead of the left hand, forcing the driver to turn to see if cyclists are coming. There, the dutch reach is part of driving tests. This petition calls for the dutch reach to be made part of all driving tests, starting with Ontario.
The picture above is of a person who died from being thrown under a bus after colliding with a car door. These sort of accidents could easily be avoided with the dutch reach. This video shows what the dutch reach looks like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXUMutD-oNA
