Save Centre for Comparative Literature, Arts and Humanities and Inter-disciplinary Research at the Central University of Punjab, Bathinda
In 2017, Central University of Punjab came up with a plan to combine the Centre for Comparative Literature and the Centre for Classical and Modern Languages, into a single Centre. With the following effects:
1. Suspend the doctoral programs in Comparative Literature.
2. Suspend the MA in Comparative Literature
3. Suspend the Mphil in Comparative Literature
The merging of the two centres will result into the gradually withering of the Centre for Comparative literature Since there is no new admission in Comparative Literature. With an 80% placement rate, the Comparative literature has been a mainstay of research in the humanities since 1950s. This proposal goes against the original mission of the university to promote inter-disciplinary research: “The University has a mission of providing wide range of instructional and research facilities across integrated and cross-disciplines” (http://www.cup.ac.in/about_CUPB.php
This decision to suspend Postgraduate and PhD programs and merge departments without consulting the faculty and students affected is an attack on the Humanities and the Arts. By suspending and eliminating programs and departments with scholars and students who are from different languages literature and cultures and can play a decisive role in the promotion of national integration in India, the University administration is endorsing the current government’s plan to reduce funding for the Higher studies, expressed most vociferously in the acts of suspending of Non net fellowships and reducing PhD seats in the universities. Similarly many departments or courses originally started in 2009 by the visionary first vice-chancellor Prof. Jai Rup Singh have been merged or closed. With students being shifted to the alternate or Parent Departments. Similarly Centre for Biosciences was shut down. In Centre for South and Asian studies most of its students were asked to shift to the Centre for Geography or others
Going forward with such drastic measures against vulnerable departments that strive promote inter-disciplinary research the University administration are contradicting the overall mission of the University and the very essence of higher education. We must demand that the University administration rescind the plan to merge the centers for Comparative Literature with the Centre for classical and Modern Languages.
I humbly request our honorable vice Chancellor and Dean Academic Affairs to personally see carefully into the matter and revert the decision. Please sign, add a comment, tell your parents about this, then pass this on to everyone in your network.
