Plans to knock down Carlisle's civic centre to make way for a new retail development have been unveiled by the council. Carlisle City Council wants to build a 200,000 sq ft department store and a number of shops and restaurants on the site of the 50-year-old civic centre. The building was designed by Charles B. Pearson & Partners and built by Carlisle firm John Laing Construction in 1964. Built from East African Olive and Brazilian Rose woods and originally decorated with Finnish lampshades and Japanese silk wallpapers.
"There was also 37,000 sq ft of French white and Italian pink mosaic on the outside cladding, and more electric lamps than in the whole of the city streets” (Mrs Riddle for the News and Star)
Mid-century modern is an architectural, interior, product and graphic design style that is now recognized by scholars and museums worldwide as a significant design movement.
Carlisle's Civic Centre still has some of the original interiors left today and could be restored to be something spectacular.
