Save Basildon Sporting Village

Save Basildon Sporting Village
Why this petition matters
We need your help to SAVE THE BASILDON SPORTING VILLAGE. Leisure centres are closing across the country due to high running costs, staff shortages, and the cost-of-living crisis forcing many people to cut down on expensive gym memberships and children’s swimming lessons.
Basildon Sporting Village is not immune, and despite the writing being on the wall for months, Basildon Council are burying their head in the sand and refusing to prepare a rescue package. This petition calls for the administration at Basildon Council to prepare a credible and wide-ranging rescue plan to ensure our Sporting Village remains open through the summer and beyond.
We are proud of our modern swimming pool, athletics track, and state-of-the-art gymnastics facilities, which has been home to gold-medal winning Olympian Max Whitlock since opening in 2011. We dream of more Basildon-based Olympians in the future, but without a Sporting Village to spark their interest and foster their talent this won’t be possible.
Leisure Centres across the UK, from Heworth in Gateshead to Yarborough in Lincolnshire, are closing at an alarming rate, and Everyone Active, who run the Basildon Sporting Village, are in serious financial trouble across all of their 200+ leisure centres. Basildon Council need to prepare for their inevitable collapse and have a plan in place to keep the lights on and the pool filled from the day this happens.
Basildon can’t afford to be without our Sporting Village for a single day, please help us by signing this petition and make the current administration at Basildon Council accountable for what’s happening to our leisure facilities.
